B-Corp: The Certification that Promises Conscious Capitalism
We at GoodPop are proud to be a certified B-Corp company, but what does that mean? B-Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit, B-Lab, to meet the highest standards of social, environmental, legal performance, accountability, and transparency. Companies are certified based on how they create value for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. Shareholders are defined as “an owner of shares in a company” whereas stakeholders are “a person with aninterest or concern in something”. Understanding the value of supporting stakeholders rather than just shareholders is what differentiates us, and every B-Corp, from a regular company. It helps us build relationships as well as be conscious of who our business decisions will affect, namely, you. YOU are the reason that we are doing everything we can to be socially and environmentally conscious because YOU are our future.
What does it mean to use business as a force for good?
It is when a company takes over the duty of a responsible citizen, while still trying to make a profit. At GoodPop, we partner with several non-profits such as Whole Planet Foundation, Keep Austin Beautiful, and the Central Texas Food Bank in order to give back to the community that has been such a huge part of our growth and success in the past few years. Our work with these nonprofits varies anywhere from adopting a creek, donating pops to volunteers, as well as monetary donations to the Whole Planet Foundation based on a percentage of sales, which provide microloans to hardworking individuals around the world.
How does being a B-Corp help your business?
We are firm believers that all businesses should pursue this certification and join us in fighting for a better tomorrow. Being a part of the B-Corp foundation has given companies like ourselves, the opportunity to lead movements, pass legislation and even benchmark performances and set goals for continuous improvement. It provides ways to save money and increases access to technology, talent, and expertise in our respective industry while still distinguishing ourselves from pretenders and attracting investors. The best part is that being a part of the movement allows us to preserve the dignity of our goals, ensuring that our mission will live on through our partners and peers. While there are several changes most companies would have to make to adhere to B-Corp’s rigorous standards, at the end of the day those small changes can make a large impact in our society. Still not convinced of why we are so proud of being a B-Corp company? Other companies like Patagonia, Ben and Jerry’s, Athleta and even Unilever have become certified to fight alongside our mission to make the world a better place for you. Currently, Unilever is the world’s largest publicly traded B-Corp. Their CEO, Paul Polman believes that their B-Corp status sends “a powerful signal that the purpose of business is not just for profit, but to have a positive impact on society and the environment.” The bottom line is that we are thrilled to be considered a B-Corp and we hope that you now see why. We hope you join the fight alongside us because a better tomorrow starts with you.
